We've got snow!

Well, yes OK, it may not be a huge amount of snow but down here in the South East of England it is quite a rare event and even more so in April! This photo was taken when I started updating my blog and the one below just as I finished.

I got my run out of the way much earlier and it was soon over as it was just an 8 miler 'cos it's the London Marathon next weekend. I won't be doing much running or knitting ahead of the big event as I need all my strength. I've been getting bad twinges across my neck and shoulders from knitting and crochet and I asked Mary Massage Lady to concentrate on that when I went for my pre-marathon massage the other day. She also had a good old poke around in my right hamstring and ITB -OUCH is all you need to know!!!

Here's the latest on my jumper. I'm 1/2 way through the second repeat of the circle motif and I find it really absorbing. I expect there may be a few ripping moments when I get to the steeks but I'll worry about that when I get there.

This next week will no doubt include some more publicity and media events. I just wish at least one of the photos of me could make me look OK! What the heck - it's all great publicity for the Alzheimer's Research Trust. I just wonder what on earth the weather will be like this year though - it was baking hot last year and knitting was really difficult with sweaty hands.

I just had to add this photo from this evening. I just looked out the bedroom window to check on the horses and the sun was shedding a glorious pink glow everywhere. That's Kizzy trying to munch the grass through the snow, bless!

Susie Hewer said...: Thanks Marina. I need the weather to be cool but dry - if it's hot I'll get sweaty, if it rains then my wool will get soggy!

I'm thinking I'll leave the neckline as in the pattern but use smaller needles to pull it in a bit as several people have commented that it slips off their shoulders.; April 6, 2008 at 11:16:00 AM PDT

Good luck with the marathon. I must try to enrol this year. I won't run it, but will walk it for defo.

Mum's Story

In 1997 my mother, then aged 81, had a series of minor strokes. Shortly after that we started to notice behavioural changes notably memory loss and confusion over everyday items. We thought it was just old age finally catching up with her. Then she started wandering and had violent mood swings. Although she already lived with us it became obvious that she couldn't be left alone for long and so I left my job to care for her. The next few years saw a gradual decline into the blackness that is 'vascular dementia'. My normally placid mum became violent and aggressive. She had psychotic incidents where she would see imaginary people (children hiding in her wardrobe, Russians sitting on the stairs, women stealing her clothes) and she would shout at them and sometimes throw things too. She was so convincing that we used to go and check that there wasn't anyone there! When my sister died mum did not know who Judy was or that she was her daughter. There came a point when I suddenly realised she no longer knew that I was her daughter and this was a terrible time for me. In the last 2 years that she lived with us, life for us all became almost unbearable as she needed 24 hour care - she couldn't be left alone at all because she would either wander off or hurt herself, she never slept for more than 30 minutes at a time during the night, she became incontinent and incapable of doing anything for herself. Finally my husband and I realised that we could no longer provide her with the care that she needed and she went to live in a special care home where the team did a splendid job caring for her in the last few months of her life. There she lived a zombified existence unaware of who she was, what she was or where she was. It was heartbreaking. She died in March 2005, the day after her 89th birthday.
